i we're you go to college and join the military as an officer better yet join the ROTC, you'll get the experience you need before you go on active duty. staying fit is a must. most of us in the military work out almost everyday. my only suggestion for you if you can afford it is to get lasik before you join. you have do it at least 12-18 months before you go on active duty and it doesn't disqualify you from joining.

I agree with jardin... Just make sure that after you get out of college don't waste much time there is an age limit... Try to stay physically fit while in college.... You do have to wear glasses during Basic but after that you can wear your contacts again....
Basic isn't a walk in the park, But if you have a good head on your shoulders you'll be fine.... The guy's will respect you if they were brought up right by their parents.... Active duty is So much better than reserves so please avoid that (unless it would work out with your lifestyle, I don't want to knock any branch of military)... You wont get full benefits through reserves though....
Good Luck with what ever you do...

First of all dont listen to these idiots. They probably couldnt bust a grape skin if they had to. BT is easy it is just a mind game that is all. If you can tell yourself you can do it you will do it. Also some ppl had a good point in the army if you go to rotc b4 bt you will come out as a 2LT. But it is advised to do that after BT cause drill sargeants like to bully you and give you all the leadership tasks to see if you can handle it.
And by the way if you are afraid of wearing the glasses, then i advise you not to join cause there is enough of your kind in the military as it is and that is why it is screwed up. Ohh by the way just remember way back b4 vietnam started like WW1 they wore the glasses in training. My advise is grow up and deal with it or just keep doin what your doing now and get your nails spray painted.

I won't lie, Army Basic is pretty tough. I've heard the Marines is even tougher. I was at Ft. Jackson, SC in March 1991. I'm a female obviously. I was in the Army for 4 years. Now when I look back on my experience in Basic it was so easy, but at the time it was stressful. You live by someone elses rules 24/7 for 8 weeks. Since you are already in good shape you have a better chance at doing good on your PT tests etc. I was in the Delayed Entry programs, I enlisted in Sept. 1990, but didnt' leave for Basic until March 1991. I ran my butt off everyday, and it helped alot. My recruiter told me I better shape up. I've heard Basic is alot easier now. The Drill Sergents aren't allowed to yell as much etc. No, you cannot wear your contacts. You must wear these glasses, and they are ugly. In the Army we call them "Birth Control glasses" Good Luck!

For a female with all the "EO" aka "Sexual Harassment" power in the world, pretty easy!!! Women in the military get very little respect from there male counter parts for the most part because they have such an easier time. I think you should just go to college and stay out of the military. Or join the military and fight for something no women has ever fought for in any of the armed forces..... equal standards. If you don't believe me look at the Physical fitness standards for men and women in the military. The female standard is incredibly lower than the males. The military's official answer to why that is..... women are weaker than men. I see no females complaining then. Go to college and get some respect.

Air Force bootcamp won't be too difficult for you if you run cross country. Plus, not being able to wear contact lenses shouldn't be the reason to make you not want to join. Good luck with your decision!

Pick a college with ROTC. Get the best of both worlds. And yes, PT (physical training) is hard.
Contact aren't practical in very muddy, or dusty environments. Say you are out on an expedition, if you get something in your eye there may not be a sink for miles. You wanna walk back?
Good Luck!!

I was in the marines from 90 to 94 . You do have to wear glasses that the government issues ,but its not that bad because everyone else wears them to. In your free time you can wear what you want. I think you will find the military life very rewarding that may help you you in college later.

You will do fine. The point is to build you up. If you get there and it starts to kick your butt I promise that when you leave you will be in the best shape of you life. It is tough for a reason, but it isn't impossible.
