Pure ignorance. To quiet them down, carry on the other half of the conversation as if they were talking to you. Drives the cellheads crazy.

I believe it's because they have a grossly exaggerated sense of self worth. They seem to think that a life hangs in the balance on every single conversation, and they don't have the sense to move to a less crowded area, or to tell the caller that they need to call them back later.

I once sat through a lunch with a friend while a woman at the next table discussed her mother's colonoscopy in great detail. My friend and I didn't know if we should tell her to shut up, as she was in a crowded restaurant, or if we should just laugh at her. We ended up laughing.

I have heard countless loud conversations on cell phones, and I can truly say that there has only been one that was loud that seemed entirely necessary. I was at the airport, sitting in a departure lounge (I was not going anywhere, I was there doing some contract work, but that's another story), and there was a family dressed for vacation and waiting for a flight to Orange County, California. The kids were talking excitedly about Disneyland. The father's cell phone apparently kept ringing, but he had the ringer turned off. He finally told his wife he absolutely had to answer it. The flight was beginning to load, but he stepped aside, and answered the call. His side of the conversation, which was loud because of the loud environment, consisted of asking about someones stats, listening, asking if another surgeon was available, and finally saying that he would come. He said they should get the patient to the operating room, and that he would get a taxi and be there in about 30 minutes. He hung up, told his wife he had an emergency, that it would take about 6 hours, and that he would catch a later flight. Could she please talk to the people at the gate and find out if he could get a seat later than evening? And then he was off, running for all he was worth. Apparently, that one time, someone's life was hanging in the balance. But that's the only time I have seen a really important phone call taken in public. All the rest have just been silly people, I think.

I think it is an annoying thing to do. Personally, I don't like the general public to hear my conversations with another individual. I think it is an area of etiquette that needs to be reeled in by our highly technological society. I once read an article on "E-mail etiquette in the business place", and this is a similar issue. We need to establish some good manners for the new age!

Simple answer: we can't hear our own voices very well on the phone. We assume that the person on the other end of the conversation can't, either, so we speak louder. Unfortunately, not only does the other person receive that loud voice, everyone else around the caller does, too.

They love to show off thier importance . Years ago when cell phones developed the headset , I would hear people talking , yelling in the street . At first I thought these folks were crazy , then I noticed the little headset cord hanging from thier ear ...lol.

some morons think they look important if they're talking on the phone ----- chances are they don't even have service and just putting on a show. Some will actually stand along side the road just to make sure everyone sees them.

They are probably suffering from hearing loss due to the constant use of the thing, so they are not even aware that they are shouting.
That or it's just insecurity. They want to make sure you think they have a friend to talk to.

Because the people and sounds around them are so loud that they have trouble hearing the person talking to them so they assume that the person talking to them is having trouble hearing them as well due to the background noise.

Sometimes it's understanding that is needed on those kind of people.
Have you experienced someone whom you can't hear so much on the phone? Oftentimes it is you who tends to talk louder because somehow you also think he can't hear you or your way of saying can you speak louder?
Of course, there are people who seems to out of control in their emotions.
