The 06 Sonata is very nice for a first car... I say too nice. Your just going to wreck it, get a beater to start out with. Something like 65% of people crash their first car in under two years, and you wouldn't want that to be a $20,000 Sonata V6, plus the V6 in those is quite stout and will definitely get you in trouble. My roommate recently rented one and it was impressive. Something like 245hp, and it can cruise at 100+ all day ;)
I would look for a sub $10K Honda accord or civic, Toyota camry or corolla, Chevrolet malibu, Ford Focus... all cheap sedans that are quite reliable, as I doubt you will want to be fixing it often with a student budget. Want something bigger or nicer? Try a VW Passat 1.8t (Good performance, great fuel efficiency, 8-year manufacturer warranty on drivetrain)
Update your question if you would like to give some more info on your financial status or needs in this new car =)

Honda Civic, very fuel efficient (over 30 something mpg in the city and close to 40 on the highway). It retains value (so you can sell/trade later) and it does not break down, that's definately the best decision. The Accord is nice but pricey, same with the Toyota Camry. Toyota Corolla is nice....

I THINK THE sONATA IS A FINE CAR AND YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH IT.
I OWN A 2005 HYUNDAI TIBURON AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
GREAT WARRANTY TOO.
THE WARRANTY WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR TEN YEARS.
AND SOME CARS LIKE HONDA,TOYOTA AND NISSAN ARE ALSO GOOD.

The Scion tC. For under $20.000, you get good looks and the power to go with it. It has the 2.4l engine from the 4 cylinder Camry so that only means good gas mileage...something you'll be needing if you're commuting to and from school or driving back home for the holidays. Dodge neons are great they last a very long time and they are really cheap even if they are used you can get a 2001 or so for 3,000. anyways if you dont like those I would go with the honda civic or accord because honda's always last the longest even though they are a bit more expensive, they have less repairs. they will last just about forever. if you dont want a car then the best thing is to get a pickup truck just because they look really cool....

i have a toyota celica and love it. toyota are some of the most reliable cars on the road. The celica has plenty of power, comfort, and looks pretty sick to. Plus if you get a used one like from auto trader, it wont cost you to much. Theres plenty of aftermarket parts for them as well.
