1) It's a covered pot usually used for slow cooking

2) It's when you fart under the blankets and pull them over your head.

I tend to think that #1 is the answer your looking for!

That's a unique idea! In pioneer days - the dutch oven was used as an outdoor oven. It was heavy cast iron pot with a cast iron flat lid = and you placed your food inside and then nestled the pot down into hot coals and put more coals on top - and your food would bake in it. This way is still used in camping, BBQ's, but can be used in your oven as well.

Typical dutch oven foods - biscuits, corn bread, cobblers, casseroles, chili, roast beef and roasted veggies - beef strogganoff, lasagne, mac & cheese, meat loaf, baked apples, baked beans and wieners - are all things I've made in a dutch oven.

Hope that helps - cute theme for a party!

A dutch oven is a large pot that you would cook things like soups or stews in. Goulash is usually cooked in one as well. You can put this pot in the oven, perhaps that is how it got its name. Why not advertise a cultural pot luck and ask people to prepare a dish from their culture in the dutch oven? You would be sure to get a variety of different dishes and the dutch oven makes for easy cooking, transporting and reheating.

one time i was camping and we dug a hole in the ground, put some coals in the hole and then a cast iron pot with chicken and veggies in it and a lid on top. afterward, we put coals on top and cooked it like that until done, but you may not have the time or your church may not like you digging holes in the ground...so it may not be a good idea to do it that way...

It's a large roasting pan in which you cook meat. My mom used one every week to get Sunday dinner started before we headed to church.
