My friend says his love for me may be eternel. Im not to sure if that is a bad thing or a good thing.

Good or bad, it's not a choice.
I think we love our past loves for the rest of our lives. I think fondly of past girlfriends and hope they are doing well.
Lot's of movies, like High Fidelity, feature calling past loves -- not to become lovers again but to talk.
I know that, with the exception of one, all my past girl friends have found me via the internet and wanted to check in to see how I am.
However, whatever yer bff is spouting, I think it's just a smooth line!

If he had said "his love IS eternal", then I'd say he meant his love is FOREVER. However, he said "MAY BE" which to me it means that he isn't sure how much he really loves you. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. He is only a friend, isn't he?!? If you are that bothered by it, then simply ask him.
