I will be staying at the HI Hostel 6 blocks from the White House, located at 1009 11th Street N.W. I plan on driving down Friday afternoon, and leaving Sunday afternoon. While I'm there, I won't need the car at all. What should I expect to pay to park for those 48 hours, and where are good spots near the hostel?

On the weekends you can park free all day, all night, as long as you're in a legal space. This can be tricky in that neighborhood but it's still very "do-able." Look for a spot on 11th, 12th, K Street or Mass Ave and you'll be within a block or 2 of your hostel. That neighborhood has come a long way in the last few years so you will be pleasantly surprised. Do not park too close to the city park on K between 13th and 14th though. Many of the streets around there have no-parking restrictions for rush hour; these end at 6:30pm on Friday so if you can time it that you get to the area around 6:25 and take a couple of trips around the block, you should have no problem. Watch for the street-cleaning signs!

Most of the paid lots in that neighborhood are strictly Monday through Friday so if you do park in a parking lot or garage, make sure you pick one that actually has an attendant on duty on the weekends. You can expect to pay $15-20/day in that neighborhood.

Be very, very careful where you park. Most street parking is only allowed during the hours of 9:30a.,m. and 4:00p.m. then those spaces become tow away zones. Your best bet is to find a parking lot, with an all day rate. Some of those are tricky ,too, because they are enclosed by fencing and the gates are locked after 7:00p.m. Where ever you do see a place, look very carefully for signs pertaining to times. D.C. is notorious for generating income from parking scams.

From $10-$25, depending on the garage.

Parking in D.C. is horrible and expensive. Since you do not need the car in D.C., you may want to consider parking your car near a Metro station (in VA or MD, depending on where you are driving from) and take the Metro to D.C.
