I've done some research on cities in Oregon and it seems even the smallest cities in Oregon have high crime. I go to www.bestplaces.net to get info. And if you check out Oregon alot of the cities from big to small have some high crime. What's with this?? Any locals out there please give me some insight on what's going on.

I am moving to Oregon in a few months, so my interest is in Oregon only, I am not looking for info on the 49 other states.

Hey, wait a minute. Why aren't folks giving her the real info?

First of all, crime is very relative to what you're used to. If you've grown up in California, the Mid-Atlantic Seaboard, or the South, I think you'll be SHOCKED at how low the level of crime is here.

Oregon is a really safe place, once again depending on where you are going and what you're used to.

The kind of crime we do have in some measure is property crime related to meth production or addiction. Like a lot of places, meth is a problem here, because it's cheap and crackers love it. But where I live, the worst crime I've suffered is having my car egged once.

It's not Mayberry, but a l of places around here are pretty darn close. Problems you will run into are related to meth, as I mentioned before, but also to our economy. We're a traditionally timber-based economy, and those jobs used to pay a high wage to lots of people with minimal education.

Now that much of the timber has been clearcut and we're trying not to cut down all of the rest, timber jobs have dried up. So you do see some sorry levels of domestic abuse, child abuse/neglect, and drug addiction. But I honestly don't know if our problems here are in any way comparable to states with large urban centers. Our only major city is Portland, which is thriving. Our smaller cities, like Salem, Eugene, Bend, Roseburg, and Medford are largely diversified enough to avoid the economic doldrums I mentioned before.

Tell me more about where you're going, and where you come from, and I'll be glad to give you more specific info if I have it.

If you look more closely at the statistics, you'll see that property crime in many Oregon towns and cities is quite high and in fact well above the national average, whereas violent crime is in most areas relatively low.
