No dog,, I would never trust any dog with a child,, I have a dog but would never leave it alone with a child, my dog has never attacked or shown any signs of attacking a child but you can never be 100% sure no matter how well you think you know your dog and young children do have a habit of pulling dogs about not realising the dangers.

Maybe I'm biased having had 2 bearded collies(my first passed away @16 years my next one @161/2) both were very gentle when around children and were active at a late age.
Personally I would not recommend the smaller breeds as they expect 100% attention from their 'keepers' so may well feel threatened with a small child about the house.
I have no doubt there are many exceptions to my theory.

Stay Away From Small Dogs! medium to large is best for children. Shepperds are the best i think. No Chows... they have a temper. And if you get a mutt make sure you know what the mix is because a shepperd lab mix, fine, a corgi chow, healer mix not fine! Also a lab will eat everything, they are only really good to get if you have a lot of land. Dobermans love to dig. Huskies love to run. Golden retrivers are great with kids and don't have too many health problems.

I had a Japanese Akita, and she was ace around children. I agree with a lot of what everyone is suggesting, don't get small fashion statement dogs, as they can be quite snappy, and would hurt a small child, just like any other dog, so either a puppy, to grow up knowing everyone from almost the start of their life, or better still just get a couple of hamsters or something like that, as they don't require walking. Because how many children ask for a dog, and promise to take them for a walk, AND NEVER DO.

Any sort of retriever, newfoundland, hound or standard poodle. Bulldogs are great around children too. If you don't teach the dog anything else - make sure that there's no food dish issues. You should be able to take the food dish away without any negative reaction from the dog. You should teach this to the dog from the very beginning. Children reaching for the dog's food is one of the biggest triggers for dogs turning and biting, nipping, mauling children.

well i suggest one main thing do not get a small dog they tend to be very snappy around kids. the best dogs that are god around children are golden retrievers, golden Labradors, collie's or mongrels as long as it ain't got a cross off Yorkshire terriers or jack Russell's cos there the worst for being very snappy around kids.
its also worth maybe phoning up somewhere like the rspca they should be able to give you the best advice on what dog is suitable for your needs. good luck and i hope ya get what you want.xx

any dog is ok, trained properly, but never let young children take the dog for a walk on their own because there are too many untrained dogs about these days - plus dogs need walking every day, twice a day at least - proper balanced diet and above all else Love! sorry to sound patronising

a labrador retriever is the best dog EVER.
when they are well trained, they are the kindest, gentlest, coolest dogs to have. i have a chocolate lab and when my grandson was born she was so gentle around the baby.
now my grandson is 2 and he will hand my dog a ball .. and by instinct my dog will turn her head and gently take the ball out of my grandson's hand. she has never once nipped or even remotely acted agressive around any kids (or anyone for that matter).
my lab is now 8 ... and she is the best dog i have ever had.

I have two dogs and two kids, one is a Collie crossed with a Belgium Shepperd and the other is a Beadle, they are great with both kids but i find that the Belgium Shepperd cross is more protective of the kids when it comes to strangers, the other one is so laid back if she was any more gentle i would have to check she was still alive.

depending on how old the children are, i woulnt be bothered about what dog more about what the children are like, any dog would be good with kids if brought up properly , i used to be a vet nurse and i have seen more bad owners than bad dogs.
