I hate to tell you this but that sounds like a sweet brush off to me. Maybe she did get her heart broken, I don't know the whole story, but it sounds like she is pushing you aside. As far as asking her out....no, I wouldn't. She has set a boundary for you and if you ask her out you are only violating that. So, here is what you do...you dont go out and do the dating thing right now...you go out and do the pal around buddy buddy thing right now. You need to be the friend that helps her through this rough time...there will be plenty of time in a year to ask her for a date.

give her a little time, show her you care about her. Like give her clues you like her (eye contact is best and most healing to us after breakups) just flirt around and when you find shes looking at you in the eyes alot to--ask her out!
