What is the difference between Southern Baptist and just Baptist?

southern baptist are far more extreme, even radical by normal standards ... they recently forced women pastors in southern baptist churches to step down ... they picket gay functions, they strongly support the republican party, they protest sex education, they protest evolution being taught in school, they protest harry potter, they rag on spongebob and tinkey winkey, they think halloween is "satanic" ...etc etc

just read a whole bunch of Chick tracts, and youll understand "southern baptist"

(they didnt use to be this extreme by the way ... this only happened a few decades ago when they were infiltrated by extreme fundamentalist - TRUE)

It's like the difference between bird and bald eagle. There are thousands of different types of bird. The bald eagle is a type of bird, but there is only one. There are hundreds of different types of Baptist. Southern Baptist is one of those types. The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Baptist organization in the world and Baptist churches can choose to be a part of it or a part of one of the other Baptist organizations, such as National Baptist Convention, American Baptist Convention, Foursquare Baptist, etc. Each convention has a slightly different set of beliefs and social agendas. The Southern Baptists are fairly conservative in their beliefs, while the American Baptists are more liberal.

I was raised Southern Baptist at first, and then my parents started attending a closer church that was fundamentally Baptist but called themselves non-denominational. I think that the difference is in the rules. Souther Baptists are very strict on what women should wear, for instance. My mother scandalized the church once by going to a service in a very nice, pretty pants suit instead of a dress. I remember freezing in a dress and tights, walking in four or five in. deep snow in Mary Janes and wondering why in the world I couldn't wear a pair of pants like my brothers, who were much warmer. It always makes me mad to remember that.

Plus, I think that Souther Baptists are louder. There's always a lot more shouted "Amen's" and such, and many more testamonials. Some of the teaching may be a bit different, too, but I don't remember much about it. It's been a while since remembering much about my religious childhood had any interest for me whatsoever.

In general they have some differnt view point on the once saved always saved, or freewill but all hold the same opinion of baptism and salvation.

I am really not sure but I believe if they preach Gods word and you are a believer we are all part of the same body.

I do think that it has to do with the worship style I think but not sure.
