Hate to ask a question; it's going to cost me five points but hoping someone has an answer.
Our neighbors are LDS and have an 8 yr old boy who was baptized within the last year. I am a Christian and attend a Baptist church and my daughter made mention of wanting to be baptized (which is great). But then she made mention of this kid across the street "already" being baptized (I've instructed her that being baptized is not a competition) and she said he "had an egg cracked on his head." Apparently, during the ceremony?
My question: Is having an egg cracked on one's head part of a LDS ritual prior to or during or after a LDS baptism? What is the purpose of it? Is it perhaps just a tradition that serves no religious purpose?
Don't try to convert me - I'm not interested. I strongly disagree with the LDS religion and consider it to be a heresy. But I would like the question answered nonetheless.
I've already checked out several websites and googled it w/ no success.
Thanks

Clarification: I am VERY familiar with the LDS religion having studied it previously. I am aware that the age of 8 is the age of consent for LDS and the age they baptize their childen.
I will not engage in arguments about LDS theolgoy vs Christian theology in this forum.
The reason for this question was precisely because in all my studies of LDS I had NEVER heard of an "egg on the head." I have NO idea why the LDS kid TOLD my daughter that is what happened at his baptism but he did.

I'm not a mormon, but I've been to a Mormon Baptism, and there was not egg cracking going on there. Absolutly not true.

No. After baptism a the child was given the Gift of The Holy Ghost. This is done by laying hands on the his head by those who hold the priesthood. Since several men may form a circle aroung him, this could look like something was put on his head.
LDS baptism is very similar to yours. The person must be at an age of accountability. It is done by full immersion.
If someone is sick then following the instructions in the Epistle of James, the elders may annoint him with oil. This is just a drop, but again they may form a circle around him.

I believe that what your daughter witnessed was the "Laying on of hands for the Gift of the Holy Ghost." This occurs after the baptism of water. A group of Priesthood holders, usually from three to eight, place their hands on the person's head, say a prayer, and confer the Gift of the Holy Ghost, often referred to as the baptism of fire. There is no egg involved, but your daughter may have been confused and tried to figure out what happened by herself. No where in any LDS practices or doctrines are eggs mentioned or involved.

There is no egg cracking in a Mormon baptism. I think the kid was talking about two different events. Maybe after the baptism they had a party and someone cracked an egg over te kid's head.

No! I was a baptized LDS. The baptism is done inside by submerging in water like most other religion's.

Your daughter is mistaken. I don't know where she got such a notion. Latter-day Saints baptize their children when they are eight years old because that is declared to be the age of accountability. Parents are supposed to teach their children by the time they are eight, the importance of making correct decisions in their lives. In other words, they should be able to discover right from wrong by the time they are eight.
Baptism is accomplished by the priesthood authority going down into the water with the baptismal candidate. Taking the candidate by the left hand and raising his right hand to the square, the priest, or elder, calls the person by name and declares "Having been commisioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Fathe, the Son and the Holy Ghost." The person is then submersed under the water and brought up again out of the water symbolizing the death of the temporal person and the birth of the new spiritual person. He is then clean from sin and walks in the name of Christ, having covenanted to always remember Him, keep His commandments and take upon him the name of Christ, becoming one of the family of Christ through His Gospel.
This is sublimely Christian and agreeable to the scripture in every way. Christ restored His authority to perform His ordinances and we carry that work forward under His direction. I suggest that you study it further on your own and from original sources, not sectarian third party information.

I simply want to comment. I never heard of the Egg thing.
I do however want to know why a Mormon cannot just answer the question without assuming the person asking is totally ignorant on their religion.
As you stated. it is a question about the egg part.
Jeez people.
who cares how you baptize or why, that was not the question.
Sorry sir, Just had to comment. But I am with you about the heresy thing.

no, there is no egg in the Mormon ceremony of baptism. There is however a laying on of hands, so maybe she got mixed up. the ceremonies are similar to all full immersion ceremonies
