Water in the lungs can be seen in respiratory or heart failure. The alveoli are filled with the secretions that hamper the gaseous exchange. If the condition were to prevail, yes, the condition would be serious as can be understood by the term failure used in the beginning. There are many causes which lead to respiratory or heart (cardiac) failure.

Well, actual water in your lungs is called drowning. And that will definitely kill you. Figurative "water", like blood or mucus or whatever that fluid is that you get with some diseases is also bad. It makes your lungs work harder because it keeps them from filling all the way with air, and it keeps the air from getting to the little alveoli, so there is no oxygen transferred to your blood. It'll kill you if there's too much fluid in there. Plus, chronic low blood oxygen makes you weak and tired and stupid because your brain isn't getting enough oxygen. So don't smoke, keep your lungs clear, and don't get fluid in your lungs.
