Cold sores can easily be transmitted between people through saliva or some other direct contact. Blisters often form on the lips and or inside the mouth. These can frequently turn into painful ulcers that make gums turn red and swell. Some people can suffer from fever, muscle aches, swollen neck glands and irritability when they get a cold sore. They can last anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks depending on treatment. look at http://theaones.com/answers/health/what-the-best-treatment-for-cold-sores.htm for the Best Treatment for Cold Sores and Herpes Simplex

cold sore is a strand of herpies, herpies is a virus hence it takes over somatic cells and inherit their DNA to reproduce. hence it varies between each person and there's no cure
you could prevent it from spreading, there are creams/gels that you could buy at drug shops

There is an OTC called Abrevia that really works. But there is also a prescription pill and an ointment that stop it dead in the tracks called Zoberax.

There are many good inexpensive products on the market....I had one coming this morning and I used
Burt's Bees hand salve and rubbed it into my lips and it is almost gone...http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategoriesDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10101&catalogId=10751
Burt's Bees has wonderful products for everything....The hand salve is great...for very dry hands ....none better.
there is also Carmex and it to is good just takes longer to work, http://www.carma-labs.com/CarmaProducts.htm
but BOTH are soothing
