There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet.

The most effective way to do that is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into fat-burning mode. Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet. Restrict the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake... that isn't an overly restrictive diet.

Having answered this question several times before, I put a more detailed answer to this question in my Blog for today: September 10.

The love handles are just a curse of having a little bit higher of a body fat %. Only way to get rid of them is to lower your overall bodyfat. To do that you have to watch your diet and up your cardio. Best cardio is keep an elevated heartrate like sprints or if your on a treadmill run on low with a jog then sprint and raise the speed up high for a minute or two then back down for 4 min then raise it back up and repeat. Crunches don't burn fat they build muscle so I'm going to squash that mythe right now before anyone tries to say doing 100 crunches or oblique crunches. Building the muscle too much on the obliques can make you look wieder which no one wants.

I think your nitpicking over your body too much. What you're seeing is a natural part of everyone's body and is supposed to be there. Don't pay attention to these people on television that have it sucked out all the time. To answer your question, it is fat and the lower end of love handles can't be toned really. You'll notice a bone right underneath. Only way to burn fat is to increase muscle and to lose weight or both.

Diet is the only thing that can work because hard exercise will only make them harder and tighter and they may get smaller but you won't get rid of them also be careful getting rid of love handles because you can't ever tell just how "lovely" your love handles may be to other people. Some people love the way love handles look on their significant other.

You can't loose weight in a particular spot. You just have to exercise and do some cardio and eventually your body will drop a few inches where it pleases.
