It's taking the play apart to show how it was put together. As a director I have to analyse every play I am about to direct. I look for things like Back History, Motivating Force also called by some the Super Objective or the Throughline of the play. I want to clarify the struggle. That's what drama is. Who's the Protagonist? Is the Antagonist another character, something in nature or a flaw in the Protagonist. Then, as director, I'm better prepared to make my choices and help the actors with their choice. I'm giving you the simple version here. The art of theatre is much more complex and on top of that it's a team effort and a time art.

Here's a form that I use for my beginning students as a guide to report/analyse a play they've read.

Play Report #

1. Your Name
2. Name of play read
3. Playwright
4. Translator?
5. Date first performed and the venue
6. Synopsis of scenes (time and place of the action of the play)
7. Description of the action per scene from beginning to end
8. Identify the Inciting Incident and include supporting argument
9. Identify the Motivating Force (the Rising action toward the goal of the play) and include supporting argument
10. Identify Protagonist and include supporting argument
11. Identify Antagonist and include supporting argument
12. Identify effective moments in either plot or character or speech and include supporting argument
13. Identify non-effective moments in either plot or character or speech and include supporting argument
14. Other plays by playwright

Analysis is really something that you should do yourself. A big part of analysis is interpretation. I'm taking a full course load of script interpretation classes this semester, and it really isn't something you can just read about.

Ask your acting teacher for clarification.
