Carbs basically are sugar. Or at least your body reacts to the food like it would be sugar. It is called the glycemic index. Naturally white things such as potatoes, rice, flour and of course sugar will react the same in your stomach rising your blood sugar. Thus making you gain weight. Those with diabetes have to really be careful of these carbs. Another one that is high is corn even though it isn't white of course it does react like sugar in the body (think corn syrup) White flour is awful for weight gain. Those who eat white bread have more problems having larger stomachs. If you never worry about carbs do think about really limiting these items as they are not good for you. People think I am not a diabetic so why worry. But your body reacts to sugar the same except you have a pancreas that works pumping out insulin to counter act that sugar. This is why after eating a sugary item you will have a burst of energy but just as quickly become tired. The reason is the pancreas secreted too much insulin and once the sugar in the stomach was dealt with the tiredness comes from the drop your body just had. Just as a person who takes insulin and drops after the sugar is used up in the stomach.

There is carbs pretty much in all foods except meats, eggs and cheese. But it's the sugar content in the carbs that you need to watch.
