DO NOT just rename the file with the extension you want, as somebody suggested!

If you need to change a format, you have to open the file in an application which will handle it (and IrfanView is a very good one for nearly all graphics formats) and then choose Save As and select the format you want in the Files of Type box. You can also change the file name, if you want to.

You need a program like Graphics Workshop Professional: http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/alchemy.html
The program is simple to use and free, it is also the best way to manage your pictures using thumbnail images.

Once you install the program run it and find your picture. The left side has a Windows Explorer type tree system that you can find the file on. The right side holds the thumbnail images. The tool icon bar just below the menu bar has the image conversion routine. It is the green button at the far left of the icon bar.

The only problem with Graphics Workshop is their nag screen. When you shut down the program it will "remind" you, verbally, to purchase a copy of the program so you can shut up the nag screen. Otherwise the free program is a fully functional version.

The program is simple to use and has some good help files. Go to the file format section and it will give you information on the various formats, and you will understand that the image has to be opened and saved in a new format, you can’t just change the extender code and hope that works.

Any paint type program like Photoshop or Jasac Paint Shop (my favorite) can let you open a graphic file and save it in the format that you chose. It will have more format options than Graphics Workshop does, but these are the less used formats, and you will have to buy the paint program (Microsoft Paint, the basic version may not help you enough). Instead of saving the graphic file, you will need to go to the menu bar and use the save as function, and then select the proper format in the Save As Dialogue box.

Get Graphics Workshop Professional or a Paint program to convert images to different formats.

Most programs allow you to change the format by selecting save as then select a format, or export and select a format.

You can open it in paint or any photo software, then go to 'save as', and save it as the same name but in a different format. Use the drop down menu to change the file extension.

Or, change it manually in the folder, by right clicking on the file icon, go to rename, and then change the .gif to .bmp, for example.

I think thats what your asking? :)

Open in MS Paint and then save in format you want. There is an options menu.

if you're using Windows XP. Open "my computer", click on TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS, go to the VIEW tab and deselect HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES. After that right click the pic you want to change the format to and click RENAME. Change what's after the "." with what picture format you want to use. e.g. pic.bmp > pic.jpg

If that doesn't work, I use IrfanView (free download on download.com) which supports a wide variety of picture formats, and can be changed between them as well.
