In order to Harden Metal you need an oven or very hot fire. The best home method without a high temp ceramic lined oven would be to build a fire out side and begin placing Coal into it until the fire is very hot. You of course would need a pipe under the fire adding fresh air into the center in order to get it hot enough. Plunge the steel into the Hot Coal not the wood Coals mind you the actual Coal which is Carbon. Allow the steel to get White hot and then remove. Hammer for annealing? and the Quench. Repeat the process but do not let the steel stay in a s long the second time and. Then Let Air Cool. The Steel will absorb the carbon from the Coal and will strengthen. I doubt you will be able to get the correct steel to do this with since it is hardley made and more. With the correct oven the process is easier and more controllable.

How To Harden Metal

For small pieces of metall, a MAPP (methacetylene propadine) gas torch is an effective way to harden. It depends on the metal you are hardening. This can be done inside in a well-ventilated area. I'd recommend that any heat treating you give metal be done in low-light conditions, since light masks the colour of hot metal and makes it very difficult.

I heat treated a small utility knife with a ten centimeter blade using this method, plus a variety of smaller ones. The metal I used was L6 Carbon steel, a carbon steel blade commonly found in saws. It corrods rather easily, but if maintained holds a great edge.

Of course!!! They NEED the Viagra to STAY HARD! I reckon internet criminals just start up companies to sell the stuff and take a few on the side. Sure, soft criminals could steal it, to become hardened criminals... But they'd soon be Hard Criminals. So there'd be no soft crime, should the kleptomania seize the common thief. I tried Viagra a few times and all it did was give me an hard on. I can get that anyway? And it meant that, because I couldn't feel anything, I hurt the girls too much... I'll wait 'til I'm impotent before I become an Harder breed of Criminal... I'd say that the only criminals who purposefully nick the stuff are the ones who have watched "Scum"... They want to get caught, having been promoted to "Hardened Criminal" from soft crimes, like smoking pot, and want to be "THE DADDY!" That way, whenever someone drops the soap - they're on the gun! Another brilliant piece of creative lateral thinking by the Judicial and Penal system... Free Viagra for all in-mates. Keep 'em busy and keep them screwing each other rather than the screws. BTW. Did you know that there's a prison in South America, run mostly by it's prisoners (being overcrowded 10x) that has 1,000,000 condoms and 1000 gallons of lubricant delivered each week. And they say that's not enough! AIDS is rife - it's the prisoner's way of making sure they stay safe. They even have transvestite hookers who'll do it for favours, protection and / or credits...

One of the simplest methods of hardening is carburising. Although the temperatures required may be high, you may be able to harden mild steels (steel that rusts very easily) by putting them on top of red hot coals (which are fired by gas from below) for about 30 mins.

The other method that may work is quenching (thats to be used if you have medium carbon steels). You basically heat up the metal till its really red hot and then plunge it into water.

Mind you, THE TEMPERATURES REQUIRED ARE VERY HIGH AND YOU COULD INJURE YOURSELF. Also there may be warpage or cracking / breaking of the metal you are trying to harden due to residual stresses present in it when it was made. So you may not achieve your goal after all.

You can harden metal at home by work hardening it. You will need to bend it, stretch it , beat it or pull it. The action hardens the material but only in a localized area.

It depends upon the size of the metal object that you want to harden. If it is a relatively small piece of metal, you can use a propane torch similar to that which is used for sweating copper joints.

You'll need to have the quench fluid close by.

you virtualy need a very hot kiln to harden or temper metal..very hot and it has to be cool lightly and quickly too 5 lbs propane gas fluwing from both sides makeing the metal cherry red!! it goes about 50 yards through that heat..if you have a friend works in a brick kiln or something like..short words man you can't do it with a torch it has to be even

It depends on what metal you are using
Different metals have different annealing temperatures.
Your oven only gets to about 500F so with most steels this will be a problem.

This explanation can go on for some time perhaps this link may
give you some options
