Honestly I don't think God looks down on anyone. Everyone makes "mistakes" in life. I drink socially. I smoke pot socially. I believe in God. I have my life in order. It's all good when that day comes. I feel like I'll go above.

It is a question I pondered long and hard. The first thing that came to mind was that it was illegal. Yes, but so is speeding. Does speeding mean I am bad? Or am I separated from God? Of course it does. I know now only from hindsight. But I could not control the need for pot even tho I thought I could. So I gave it up. But not before the damage was done. I lost a wife and all my worldly possessions over it before I realized that I was not facing up to the fact that I did not want to give my whole life to God. It was only when I finally did that God was able to bless me with a new wife, four beautiful kids, an unbelievable job, home and a peace that is beyond understanding. Don't get me wrong, I will not condone drawing ppl to God for material gain. It is SO much more than that. Cause I am happier now for the last 17 yrs than I have ever been in my life.

You are so sweet Kathie...
Like the guy earlier said, it's all a heart issue. It doesn't say in the Bible: Don't smoke pot or Don't drink alcohol, so it's between you & God. It's sin depending on your motive.
If I smoked pot....it would be very sinful because I would be doing it to avoid things in my life & try to sabotage good things by being high. I would be literally trying to ruin my life.
If I have wine for dinner, it may not be a sin....it could be a sin, if I'm doing it so I can be drunk and not be responsible for my actions.
Most non-blatant sin, is between you and God. Your husband's sin is between him & God. If you don't want him to smoke pot...then if he were a Christian, God would tell him that he isn't being a good husband becaused he's not treating his wife the way Christ treated the church. Your husband wouldn't be honoring you, and that would be the sin.

If you think God cares whether you break laws or not, then he probably also cares if you smoke pot. On the other hand, it does say in the Bible (if you don't believe in it, you probably don't care what the Christian God may or may not think anyway) that being a drunkard is a sin, but not that drinking alcohol is.

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
It's believed the wine back then was only 2% alcohol so you had to drink a lot to get hammered. No question about it, some got pretty hammered, too.
I believe a little is just fine. The anti-oxidants in a good Merlot is good for you. I like a cold beer after yard work. A good Margarita is hard to beat with Mexican food.
The thing is:
1) I don't get hammered.
2) If I feel convicted by it, for any reason, I don't.
3) If I think someone may stumble in their walk by observing me having one I won't do it.

I am not Christian but it is my understanding that the point in Christianity is not to be under the influence of anything but the Christian God. To drink in moderation would not put you under the influence. In my personal experiance, pot doesn't have that "in between" effect when you smoke it your stoned (of course there are different levels of stoned). So I would say pot no, drinking in moderation yes.

I think God wants people to be healthy, if they can be. Drinking alcohol and smoking pot work against that goal. And both things can lead to more serious consequences, "accidentally." There are lots of unanticipated consequences that can arise from drug use, whether it be legal or illegal. And in this case pot is illegal. I personally don't think it's worth the risk. Not to mention the risks that the other people involved might pose. Drug dealers, drug users etc.

If he is not a Christian that is the larger issue which must be addressed first. If a person wants to be a follower of Jesus Christ, they must make the decision are they willing to pay a price if required by Him. This is essentially what happened with the rich young ruler. This is similar to Abraham being required by God to offer his son Isaac.
Jesus drank wine, and we know this from the New Testament scriptures. Some try to say that the wine didn't have alcohol, but that is ludicrous. The very "Lord's Supper" (the Pesach, or "Passover" meal) included 3 cups of wine. I don't think that Jesus was ever drunk with wine, as He is the sinless Son of God, but He definitely did drink wine.
I think that as long as someone can be moderate and exercise self discipline, that having an ocassional drink is O.K. But I would recommend that it be with a meal, and in the privacy of your home. The problem with the discipline/moderation thing is that your tendancy to be self-controlled is diminished by the alcohol. The more you drink, the easier it is to say that "just a little more won't hurt you."
Personally, I think that alcohol is one of the worst drugs, because it kills a lot of innocent people in vehicular accidents. It is also a depressant, which alters mood and tends to bring out the worst behavior in a lot of people. For these reasons and more, it is rightfully stigmatized, and no professing Christian should want to chance defaming Christ with an association with that lifestyle.
As for Cannabis (Marijuana, Pot) I have had a lot of personal experience in years past with this also. I have to say that it never influenced me to make good decisions for myself. It always led me to hang around derelicts, and my pursuit of it took me to a lot of places that I had no business being in. It dulls the mind, plain and simple. I really don't think that we can live a healthier life with drugs and alcohol polluting our minds and bodies.
Because our whole being is interconnected, interrelated and interdependant (that is, our spirit, soul and body) it ultimately causes our spiritual lives harm if we do anything that is harmful to our minds or bodies. The Spirit of God and the Word of God is going to lead us to make healthy decisions, and decisions that bring us closer to Him in the end. I don't really see (and again this is from lots of personal experience that I say these things) how being involved with these chemicals is ever going to help us be closer to Christ. They can only take us further away.

Ok... here we go:
First to answer your question... An occasional alcoholic beverage is not harmful... and whether or not an occasional joint is harmful is still a matter of debate, so I will not attempt to address that... however it is wrong because it violates the laws of the land, which the Bible tells us we are to adhere to (provided that they do not conflict the laws of God).
Incidentally, the Bible tells you that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Would you want to live in a dirty house??? Probably not. It follows logically then that God would want us to keep our temples clean.
Which brings us to the more important issue... your husband not being saved is a precarious position for you... however it could be a position of great blessing... because your example could lead him to Christ. Be prayerful for that.
Remember that Christ calls us to be lights... kinda like a city that sits on a hill... BE that light so he can find his way.

Your husband probably smokes more pot than you are aware of
... but as far as God is concerned I think that drugs serve different purposes for different people and for some it is bad and others not.
