I puzzle over this as well.
Some have already given some good insights into why this seems to be happening.
To what they have said, I would add that the Internet and its anonymity and ease of quick response I think cause people to toss off flippant, insulting replies before they even think about what they are saying. I wonder if people would say the same things if they were sitting across from you at a coffee shop, or at least say these things in the same way.
The other part of the problem with the Internet is that people don't have to be accountable for what they say --it seems like anything is fair game, despite rules and guidelines.
Many who are offensive I suspect are people in a great deal of pain, sadness, anger and depression.
Others have come to the forum with specific agendas--to try to convert, unconvert, sway, persuade for their own purposes. These are folks heavily invested in getting certain results and are less willing to entertain ideas that are different.
Yet, it's a curious thing, isn't it--why so many who are atheists or anti-religion come to the religion and spirituality forum, when there are so many other interesting forums to chose from? I guess some are looking for debate and arguments, which is frustrating for people who want to engage in gentler conversations.

People are sometimes offended by what they do not understand. Romans 11:8 says "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so they could not see and ears so they could not hear, to this very day" But there is also hope for unbelief as Romans 8:23 says "And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. The good news is Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. That is a free gift and we all need to receive that gift graciously.

Auntie, first let me say WELCOME to this site... I notice you are fairly new. (Your question gave that away, but then I looked at your home page and confirmed it).
The inquiries you are asking about are so often received as offensive because this site seems to draw people that want to tear everybody else down. I got pulled into that for a while, but realized what was happening and visited other sites for a while.
We cannot seem to let people with differing opinions alone. If we see a question and we know we are not going to like it, we have to click on it and then run our heads like a 6 year old. We, for some reason cannot let it alone.
Many of us are all guilty of this no matter what our belief system.
If we could all live by the saying --- If you don't have something good to say, DON"T SAY IT. We would be much better off and we wouldn't have people leaving this site that are good people.
Example-- answers above and below mine -- their answer is to tear down Christianity instead of leaving the question alone.

Not at all. Those who give you the impression of being offended are perhaps not very confirmed in their faith, or being compassionately fearing for the spiritual harm of your soul by misunderstanding your question.
You may also realize that the existence of God is the most difficult and most controversial subject through centuries of disputation among men. Both believers and non-believers who know nothing about Him keep on writing tons of books as eloquent deniers or advocators.
Anyhow, the One True God still exists from eternity to eternity, and bestows His divine love and guidance on all mankind to raise them to an ever-advancing civilization.
I propose that you independently seek for Him by reading the Holy Books revealed successively by His Divine Messengers. Most of all these Sacred Scriptures are now easily and freely accessible at the Gutenberg Project.
Pray for your great joy on this spiritual journey.

The inquiry is not offending. What is offensive is the attitude that some people have that their beliefs are OBVIOUSLY the only correct way to see the world. This does not apply to your question, but it does apply to alot of other questions.

I understand how you feel. I actually come to this section to help people learn the truth about spiritual things, and hopefully guide them away from God and religion altogether so they can lead happier lives.
You should see some of the vulgar perverted sickening replies I receive from religious people, but then I understand that these people suffer from mental illness and lack of intelligence, and so, perhaps their behaviour, although irrational, has a rational explanation. I hope the following helps ease your pain and suffering.
Atheists are more intelligent than religious believers.
My own observation and analysis of the various posters on Yahoo Answers clearly reveals that Atheists are without any doubt, far more intelligent, thought provoking, and capable of holding sensible debate compared to their religious counterparts.
My private research studies indicate that religious people tend to be below average intelligence, and also have a tendency to be more violent than non-believers. This is also supported by profiling various religious posters on Yahoo Answers.
Science suggests that religion is a mental illness and that religious people act irrationally because they are genetically predisposed to the “religious or spiritual” gene. Statistics indicate that the higher your education, income, and intelligence, the more likely you are not to believe in a god.
In general terms, this summarises as Atheists are intelligent and religious people suffer from madness.

when some clown asks if Jesus is the King like burger king, it is an obvious attempt to be offensive. If a person is truly seeking information about God, a true Christian is honored to try to share his faith

Because anyone who has an idea of god wont change it, why should they, its been working so far. Even you already have an idea of god, so, why inquire at all? Whether you say that there is or isn't, or that it is this and not that, you will be lying to yourself and to others. The question of god is ultimately irrelavent, no one is really interested, not even you.

Because the church needs to constantly surpress free thought, curiosity, and skepticism, or they would lose all their followers to intelligence and facts. They do this by eliminating ALL questions or doubts about God.
