They are trying to get a life - and everything they see in life shows them that they are supposed to be part of a couple or at least seeking that kind of relationship, because that is all the grown ups are interested in. It is not hard to understand when you look at the situation from this perspective.
If we, as a society, want kids to focus on their studies, we need to lead by example, in our lives, entertainment, media, etc.
