Maybe it's a clue left behind by the culprit; like a signiture mark. I found supporting data that suggest something or some one evil was responsible. Have a look:

It's just a coincidence that the smoke looks like a face. When you look at the picture, all it is is 2 horizontal lines of shadow above a diagonal one, which is above another horizontal one. This could easily be happen. Remember, smoke came out of the towers for hours. The odds of those 4 lines appearing at any point in the smoke at one point isn't that bad.

I know that people want to think of the picture as something more than smoke with a shadow, but let's face it; the design was incredibly simple. If the "face" were surrounded by an egg-shaped polygon (outline of face) or the "face" was shown across the entire are of smoke, I'd think more of it, but it doesn't seem like a sign from God or anything like that.

If the design were more complex, I don't know if I'd see it as a good or bad sign. My opinion would probably be based on whether I saw a smile or a frown.

As for the cross pictures, that formation should have been expected. Most building are built with metal beams vertically and horizontally. If any two beams of different directions manage to stay attached after the destruction of the building, the cross is the expected shape. If the metal beams came out in the shape of star or some other more complex shape, I'd think something of it.

Short answer: Based on probability, the smoke face and metal cross were bound to turn up naturally.

I've seen faces in campfire smoke, its a coincidence. There are also thousands of beams shaped like that cross, chances are one would land upright.
