I have one. We've had problems with the starter locking up. It's had to be replaced 2x's. But otherwise, no problems.

My mother's had a '95 Oldsmobile Achieva for quite a while; the Grand Am and the Achieva are corporate twins that share the same platform. The engine and transmission have held up great, not requiring very much repair at all. But I can't say the same thing about the interior, which after 11 years is starting to fall apart.

The Grand Am is one of those cars that I'd say is all right as cheap basic transportation if you don't mind that it really feels like it's cheap basic transportation.

I had a 1992 SE a long time ago, in high school, and it was awesome though it was six years old. You can really speed and drive in that thing! They're cute too. I'm not too keen on the design of the 01s, but they are tight little cars, fuel efficient. Just make sure the fluids and filters are ALWAYS maintained. A good rule is to do it every three thousand miles...and to get it done someplace professionally. Otherwise you could have an engine problem somewhere down the line, or a transmission problem. But these are good cars.

We have an 00 Pontiac Grand Am. I really love it. It's a very reliable car. There are a few cons though. Ours always hidroplains (sp) On rainy days. It's also been recalled several times. But It's a very reliable car I think you'd be happy with.

Not sure about the Pontiacs, but if you're going to buy a used car, I'd consider a Toyota or Honda instead, or at least consider them in addition to the Pontiac.

My feeling is that Toyotas and Hondas are among the most reliable cars out there.

Good luck.

pontiac grand ams are pretty good. it's all i've ever driven. i had an old hand me down 1988 (my stepmom didn't take good care of it and that was the only reason it was a piece of crap), but about 6 months later i traded it in for a 1993...then traded it in on a 2002. the only problem i've ever had is with the computer security system on the 2002...it would randomly lock up on me, where it wouldn't start. that was kind of random, but i took it to the dealership and they disabled it. it's as good as new! i love my car!

I had a 1998 Grand Am and it was a piece of crap. It looked good but I had more mechanical problems with it than any other car I ever had.

My wife and I have owned two. We returned one on a Lemon Law lawsuit. While you might like the power of the Grand Am there seems to be a problem with the head gasket. On our first one we had to replace 3 of them before 80,000 miles. It is like the engine can't always handle to power.
I wouldn't buy another one.

I have an '89 Grand Am it has 275 thousand miles on it and runs like a champ still.
It has always had proper maintenance & up keep etc.
I think they are quality cars, however as with all things there are bad & good ones out there.
Have a mechanic check it out b4 you buy it.
Good Luck :o)

I've got a 1994 Grand Am. It works fine and is a reliable car. It's a good first car for high school students, i.e. cheap and reliable.

Don't buy. Plastic intake manifolds which warps. Ignition coils which go out without notice. Transaxle which can lock up.
I learned the hard way. No more American cars for me.
