Why garlic makes you stink and other important facts
One of the most romantic dinner dates in cinematic history is probably Lady and the Tramp and that plate of spaghetti.
But only a dog could get away with that in real life.
Because all the accordion music and moonlight in the world won’t disguise the fact that a garlic-laced plate of spaghetti is hardly date food.
It’s not exactly chic to reek, after all.
But have you ever considered why, after eating a meal that tastes so delectable, you wake up the next morning smelling like a pair of dirty socks?
Or how you can wipe the smell of garlic off your hands after you cook?
Or if it this stinky-but-tasty bulb really can ward off cancer and vampires?
In advance of the Gilroy Garlic Festival which runs Friday through Sunday, we’re offering some little bulbs of garlic wisdom that you can digest along with a big plate of pasta puttanesca.
Where does garlic get that smell?
When you crush an innocent little garlic clove, it releases an enzyme called allinase, according to information gathered by Pat DeStasio at Christopher Ranch in Gilroy.
That enzyme mixes with an amino acid called alliin, which is also present in the clove.
When they combine, it’s like a little chain reaction that creates something called allicin, which contains sulfur molecules (the stuff that smells like rotten eggs).
That’s why it smells.
Why does your breath and skin stink after eating garlic?
The sulfur molecules that are created when garlic is smashed or chewed are absorbed into the bloodstream and lungs and escape through exhaled air and perspiration.
It’s so potent, there are stories that if you rub garlic on the soles of your feet, it will give you garlic breath, says DeStasio.
She’s not sure about the truth of that, but she did say, that one year she and a couple of co-workers wore garlic leis during a long, hot day manning a booth at the Garlic Festival.
"It went right through our skin," she says. "We reeked for days after from just wearing the stuff."
How do you cure garlic breath?
Time is the only sure cure. About 24 to 48 hours after eating the garlic, the smell should go away.
But there are other ways to mask the smell for at least a little while. Breath mints work, as well as chewing on some parsley.
Some suggest eating a coffee bean or cardamom seeds.
The best course may be to only hang out with garlic eaters, so no one really notices.
How do you get the smell of garlic off your hands after cooking?
According to the Straight Dope, a Web site dedicated to debunking myths, if you rub your hands on something made of stainless steel under a stream of running water, the smell goes away.
No one knows why. It just does.

Garlic is a wonderful super food, not only does it taste good, it cleans your blood. There is no doubt that the pungent odour stays on your breath and seeps through the pores in your skin, just make sure your lover eats it at the same time and you will cancel each other out. As for everyone else in close proximity I say HARD LUCK ! LOL.

It's just so freaking strong it goes to your lungs & sometimes out your pores, depending on how much you've eaten. Try this: chase the garlic w/ at least 1/2 cup fresh parsley. You'll smell much better after. lol

garlic dries out the mouth, creating less saliva which leads to less oxygen in the mouth. this allows for the bacteria that causes bad breath.
