Sometime between 6 and 11 months, she will begin to have a blood tinged discharge....there is no warning..it just suddenly happens.. while having this spotting, her vulva will swell..after about a week, she is able to breed..then will be able to breed for about a week (less when very young) and then will still attract males for another week.. it all takes about 3 weeks of H*ll .. She will be moody, disobedient, and try to escape your home...If you both live through it without killing each other..then you will be wanting to have her spayed before you ever have to go through it again..This will happen about every 6 months until she is spayed..
.It is far better to have her spayed before either of you ever experience this...No dog should ever be bred until after their second birthday... Meanwhile, there is a lot of stained/ruined furniture.

There are 3 stages that I'll give you average lengths for....
1. Proestrus. This is the stage when the female is going into heat but will not allow males to breed. Length=9 days
2. Estrus. This is where the female will accept males and be bred.Length=9 days
3. Diestrus. The dog is no longer receptive and is going out of estrus but you should keep her away from males during this period if you do not want her to be bred.
4. Pregnancy. Average length (counted from first day of breeding)=58-66 days.
5. Anestrus. This is the resting phase between the minstrel cycles. Length=5-7 months. Hope this helps.

She should go into heat anywhere between 6-9 months. You should get her spayed BEFORE her first heat though. I would advise that you get your little girl spayed. Breeding responsibly and ethically is a huge responsibility and involves much more than simply breeding your dogs. Both parents should be fully tested and certified against the common congential illnesses of the breed. They should also conform to breed standard and be show quality. If you would like more info on ethical breeding practices check out this website:

This website has good info on the common problems in Poms. Your dog may look fine on the outside but without knowing your dogs genetic history, your dog could pass on deadly hereditary defects.

PLEASE BE PART OF THE SOLUTION NOT THE PROBLEM

The female dog comes into season approximately every 6 to 8 months, though this period becomes more erratic with age and is somewhat irregular when cycles first begin. The exception to the every 6 to 8 months rule are African breeds (Basenji, Rhodesian Ridgeback) who cycle once a year. When female dogs get older (say, age 7 or older) they do not stop cycling; there is nothing similar to menopause.

a dog goes into heat approx... at 6 months...their vulva will swell up and about 2 to three days later they will start bleeding! Its best to go and get your dog fix if your not planning on breeding the dog to improve the breed! But you cant get the dog spayed while they are menstruating!
hope this is of some kind of help to ya!
