Yes he did, and this is in harmony with the whole bible.

Eccl 9:5, 10, teach that the dead know nothing.

So just as a doctor puts you to sleep to operate on you. Death is the same as sleep.

After the surgery the doctor will give you a shot to help you wake up.

Jesus has been given the responsiblity to judge those whom he will resurrect (bible word means to stand up)

Immortality is only mentioned as a reward for faithfulness.

Ez 18:4, states that the soul will die.

Acts 2:34 says King David is still in the grave at Jesus death. Where was he durning all this time if he was still alive somewhere?

He's been asleep awaiting the fulfillment of John 5: 28

Yes, Jesus does call death a sleep.
There are two different kinds of death. There is the first kind, that of Lazarus. Then there is the second kind.
Most people die the first kind. This is also referred to as planting seeds. If you plant a seed in the ground what happens? A plant grows. If you plant your body in the ground what happens? A new, better body is grown somewhere. Which everyone debates, who care where? God knows for sure right?
The second kind of death is a death from which there is no resurrection. It is the second death. In revelations it is referred to as a lake of fire, then is identified as a death from which there is no return.
Hell. Hades. Religion will try to confuse you and tell you these are really places that God has reserved to punish you in. God is surely not that evil, and will not appreciate them telling you these harsh things about him either. In the old testament when the Jews were burning there babies to a god named Mo lech. God was offended to say the least. He said such a thing had never entered his heart. don't sound like he built a place to enjoy listening to the cries of people enduring the flames for eternity to me.
Of course there you do have to believe in Jesus and accept his sacrifice of his life so you can have yours. You have to actually realize you needed him to die because you don't deserve yours. Because yes you are indeed inclined to do evil all day every day. and you can't help it. This is the only ness to it. Good luck.

although to me sleeping is the closest we get to death without actually dying, (motionless, not aware of what is going on around us, in a spirit form-dreaming, and pretty much looking like we are dead)...On this earth everything cycles which requires sleep, but what about our spirits which dont come from here? huuuum! To answer your question, I beleive Lazarus was really dead, Jesus just referred to it probably thinking in the devine because of the devine act he was getting ready to perform. EXCELLENT QUESTION! Hope that helps.......

Not only was Lazarus dead he was REALLY dead. As in three days dead. The Jews believed that after three days the soul was gone beyond recall.

Maybe Jesus was referring to the physical body. Because NDE experiencers suggests the continuity of perception/awareness.
