Wow, the answers you have received so far are wrong. Generally when you are sentenced to a year or less you are in a county jail, not a prison. How much time depends on a few things. First of all, is the person on any type of work release program? Is the person, when released, going home or to a rehab of some type? This all makes a difference.
For the most part a year in county jail is a year, 365 days. Judges have the right to decide if the person is eligible for 2:1 days. Some county jails allow 2:1 days if you work in a county jail work detail such as laundry, kitchen, etc. If you do for each day you work you get two days credit. That can dramatically drop time off a sentence. This only includes ACTUAL DAYS WORKED. If they don't work that day it's 1:1.
Hope that answers your question.

Is it a misdemeanor? If so your friend will probably be in for 3 or 4 months. Usually 1 day in jail equals 3 days of a sentence if you are good. If it's a felony it may be up to half the time so 6 months.

The ratio of time sentenced to amount of time served can vary because the judge may sentence the person to serve 2:1 or 3:1 or 1:1, depending on the nature of the crime, however, class a misdemeanor crimes A (the highest of misdemeanors which carry this type of sentence) are usually fined and probation is then issued...

Here you go the real list depending on his classification in the system.
1. Each and every day is just a day served. Usually reserved for the hard asses in jail.
2. Every three days is like serving 4 days
3. Every day is 2 days
these are your usual ways they do it. Now he can get some of his time served days taken away for misbehaving. He can also get reclassified at any time during his tenure.

Well, if he behaves well he can be out in 1/3 of the time. This means about 4 months in his case.
