I have learned for being with the poor and seeing so many, that they have feelings. They are not proud of the fact that they need food stamps and help. The poor people are very insecure. They have great sense to know when they are being belittled. They are ashamed. The young boys and girls can tell when other children have more then they do. They are singled out by some, because they are not clean or dressed as nice as some. The teachers (some) single children out because they are less fortunate. I have seen this. The poor are put in catagories and are singled out. I have learned from the poor that others make you feel inadequate. I have learned that to purchase laundry soap, shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, toothpaste, dishsoap, or any other un-eatable product , that is is difficult to find money to purchase these needed items. Diapers , are very difficult to purchase as they never have enough money to buy them. I have learned from the poor that a vehicle is used only when needed. No trips. I have learned that the poor can not attend social events. I have learned from the poor that you can not buy a new pair of shoes or clothes. Go to the used clothes shops. They can not purchase garbage bags, or stickers to have their garbage hauled out properly. They can not afford a pet. They can not afford sanitary pads. Can not afford to even go to the movies or buy a small bag of popcorn. and it goes on and on.

Make do, recycle, make your own, be creative in meeting your needs. Poor people have learned the art of shopping in thrift stores and flea markets, how to use things that maybe weren't originally designed for it as furniture, improvising window coverings, bedding, other household necessities from hand-me-downs or leftovers. They know how to buy food that can feed a lot for very little money, and sometimes even get so good at it they can feed others. (The Diggers feedings were the poor feeding the poor, after all. Are they still around?)
Most of all, how to be happy without being too much of a materialist. They are more likely than middle-class people to have a sense of community, know how to work together to get something accomplished, and the economies of scale. We have a Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz, where homeless people work at raising vegetables for themselves, and flowers to sell. They are pretty well organized, and do well with bouquets and plants at Christmastime.

the actual answer sometimes is that even after seeing poor people and thier life, there are still ppl out there who learn nothing from them and understand nothing of them. it really sucks how ppl cant see past them selves and thier own lives and only concentrate on what is happening around them. if one really wants to learn from them, there is alot more that we can learn than i can list in this answer

That being poor isn't the worst thing in the world. That there are somethings (like family, love, happiness, doing the right thing, etc.) that are more important than money.

We can learn the lesson of love from them. I have seen poor people loves their kin very much. Small kid who themselves can't walk properly but they are carrying their younger younger sister/brother. They know how to face hard times from the very childhood.
