Once your blood sugar level is adequately controlled, there are rare occasions when you could have a low blood sugar level. These occasions can be your not taking food, repeated vomiting (leaving you hungry), fever, sickness, heavy exercise, etc.

However, there are some symptoms that you will have to watch out for as these will help you overcome the low sugar levels which may result inadvertently. These are weakness, dizziness, hunger, abdominal cramping, lightheadedness, cold skin, high pulse rate, sweating, anxiety, tremulousness, nervousness, etc.

Carry some sugar cubes with you always or keep them handy. Pop in once you start getting the above symptoms and check your blood sugar level (thereafter only as the symptoms worsen fast, without letting you test your sugar level).

I don't have hypoglycemia but I have type 1 diabetes and there are times that my blood sugar has dropped down to low levels just like someone with hypoglycemia would have. I have to keep glucose tablets(sugar tablets) handy at all time in case it happens. If it does happen I have to check my blood, take 4 tablets, then check my blood 15 minutes later till its above 70. If its still low I have to keep eating some kind of sugar to help bring it up. After about two 15 minute periods of checking its usually up again.

I am hypoglycemic, I never check my blood sugar like a diabetic must. However I am pretty careful about my diet, leaning heavily to the high protein, low sugar type diet. I eat a lot of vegetables, though corn isn't supposed to be allowed. I go for yams instead of white potatoes, even make "french fries" out of them!
I can't imagine what makes you think you might 'get hypoglycemia' when you're older. I am the only one in my (large) family that has been diagnosed with the pain-in-the-patoot thing!!
