It's only about half of what you do. The other half of it is diet. If you want to gain strength you should lift weights. You will want to do high weight with low reps and about 3 to 4 sets. Plus you will want to increase your protien intake. Protien is vital if you wish to build muscle. Also there are a number of supliments that will help speed up this process. Such as protein shakes, creatine, and a great supplement is N02. Also when working out you will want to stagger your routines and attempt to avoid working a major muscle group more than once a week. For instance
Mon- work your chest. Bench press (flat, incline and declines)
Dumbell presses and flies.
Tues - work your tri's and shoulders
Wed - work you bi's and back
Thur - Take a day off (you need to give your body time to recup)
Fri - work your legs
Also you will want to limit the amount of cardio you are doing as this will effect the way your body utilizes the protiens and carbs.

There are some great sites that can help you create a personal routine.
If it isn't routine, you won't stick with it.
The link below will help you formulate a plan to get the muscles you want. You can choose which type of equipment you prefer to use and whether you want an allover body workout or isolated exercises.
Please note this site also advocates nutritional supplements. I, personally believe that if you eat a balanced diet, 5 small meals each day, keeping your food 'clean' that is whole and unprocessed as much as possible, it is much better for you than adding supplements, please don't do it.

First off, you better be serious about it. Half hearted is a waste of time. Second, if you can join a gym. Even if only for a few weeks. There you can ask all kinds of question and then do you're stuff at home where it's cheaper.
and quit the junk food. What your body becomes depends on what you put in it.

go to your local gym, there you should be able to meet with one of their trainers and you could see if they would be ablr to help you come up with a personal exercise plan and stuff, that is their job and that is what they are there for good luck
