Psalm 6:4-5 (David is saying: how can I praise God when dead?)
4. Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.
5. For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?
Psalm 146:3-4 (the dead know nothing)
3. Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
4. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

You see this belief in no life after death reflected in a lot of the older books in the bible. The book of Job has a lot of verses like this too. Perhaps the early writers of the bible didn't believe in an afterlife. Maybe for them heaven was a place that was yet to be created when God remade the heavens and the earth. Maybe they believed that they would "rest" until the would be recreated in the future when God destroys this world and creates a more perfect one. This is what I believe.

For starters, a verse alone does not always mean the same thing.

For instance read entirely the story of Davids young son with bathsheba. David is stating that there is no need after the death of this son to pray for him or to fast and pray for his son, for he is with the Lord and I (David) will go to him, he will not come back to me.

So , yes David believes whole heartedly that when he dies, he will go to Heaven and be reunited with his now fleshly dead son.

In other verses, he is speaking of the Dead in Spirit, those who chose not to believe in Davids God and therefore will spend eternity apart from God.

Very many times in the bible, the word dead is used to mean spiritual death and not fleshly death.

Job himself did not belief in an "afterlife" and this is why he asked God to "hide him in Hades" so that he would not suffer anymore. So, if hades were such a horrible place, why would Job want to go there to get away from PAIN? (Job 14:13)

Hell is a place of inactivity, see Psalms 6:5; Eccel. 9:10; Isa. 38:18, 19.

The Bible uses 4 separate words in the Holy Bible to denote hell, those words are Hades, Tartarus, Sheol and Gehenna. Look them up on Wikipedia or an Encyclopedia, or dictionary. NOT ONE was a place of firery torment.
