Look at your owner's manual and/or the box that it came in. If it says, "HDTV Ready", then it is capable of high resolution performance, but need an HDTV tuner in order to receive this format. Now, if it says, "HDTV" only, then it is ready to receive a high-def signal. This is for local broadcasting only unless you have ordered HDTV service from your video service provider.
Now, if you have an HDTV, then you will further have to find out if it's a low resolution (720p) HDTV or a high-rez set (1080i), or a full-rez (1080p) set. The higher the resolution, the better quality picture you will receive from a high-def signal.

If it is a new set (HDTV type) and made recently (last year) it will have built-in tuner for receiving broadcast HDTV. If it is older than 2 -3 years, it probably doesn't. Check the manual and see if your set will received digital channels, which are all identified with a double number, such as 4-1, 5-1, etc. If there are instructions on how to tune those numbers in, the set has a tuner. By the way, you only need a tuner if you are going to connect an antenna to your set. It is not needed to hook up to cable or satellite.

if it says "HDTV Ready" it does NOT have a built-in HDTV tuner - you'll need to order a HDTV converter box from your cable or satellite company.

it will have the "HD READY" logo stamped on its front-beware it does not say "hd compatible" or "1080i compatible" these are not true hd ready sets only a tv with the above logo can be hd ready. this is to say an hd source (sky box/dvd player etc) can be plugged directly into the set via the HDMI socket on the back and the set will display high definition images.

If you have cable, go to one of the HD stations. If you don't have HD, it will not display If you do, you'll be able to view the station.

rtfm = read the manual
Chances are if you're asking this question, it doesn't. You spend extra for HD so if you didn't feel it in your wallet, you won't see it on the screen.
