The best thing for you to do is make it clear that he can stay up as late as he wants to. Also make it clear that you will wake him up very early with a nice cold bucket of water. Its called "late night awakening". Try this out sometime on the weekend.
Now if you're one of those parents that isn't mean enough to do so, you could also try just punishing them for not going to sleep at there bed time. Pending on the age of the child, you have a variety of actions to take (No toys, No friends, etc.). (Example: Let your child know that for every ten minutes they're not in bed they're grounded for a day.)
I hope I could help.

You must start your child on a rigid schedule. Up early, physical activity during the day, no naps, and then start a bedtime ritual. I had my child take a lavender bath(lavender is a relaxing scent). Then we both have a cup of chamomile tea with a tsp of honey. He likes the one on one time. Then it is time for bathroom and bed. There is no getting out of bed. If he can not sleep he is to stay in bed anyway. It took about three weeks for it to start working but boy is it worth it. P.S> I raised 19 children.

Put that child in bed early as possible. I have a hard time with my daughter going to bed at night. I go to bed with her and turn off all the lights and the TV. House be pitch dark you do not have no choice but to go to sleep in my house. My daughter is only 7.

You need to set a definate routine for him. Have a set bedtime routine (bath, brush teeth, story, lights out.) If he won't go to sleep he can just stay in his room all night. If he has a T.V. in there, take it away! He might conk out on the floor in no time, especially if you aren't fussing over him. I also recommend a book called "Good Night Sleep Tight" by Kim West. It works with kids infant to school aged who have sleep problems. It sure helped my 2 year old.

When I get on that kind of schedule I make myself stay up all night for one night fall asleep at a certain time and set my alarm for a certain time so that I don't get in a bad sleeping habit.

Maybe your child sleeps during the daytime. If the child completes his quota of sleep during the day, then it is quite fair that the child would not sleep during the night. Therefore you must not allow your child to sleep during the day time.

Put him in his room and go to bed. When you wake up in the morning make him wake up too. Even if he is cranky, then don't let him take to long of a nap, and put him to bed at a decent time. Within a few days he will sleep at night.

my pediatritian recommend this all natural supplement you can buy over the counter in the drugstore or grocery store, etc. Even walmart will have it. It works wonders. It is called Melatonin.
You don't mention the age/size of your child, so ask your doc for dosage, and his okay.
