Is there any way to guarantee that a building (like a church) could be nut free? Is it enough to ask people to only bring in baked goods that don't contain nuts? Or do we have to ask them to bring in store bought goods only? Or, is it impossible to keep it completely nut free even if the food you serve has no nuts in it?

I know that my son's school is "nut free", but can this be achieved in a volunteer organization such as a church, with the millions of potlucks, bakesales and coffee hours that are held?

Ask your church/organization to include ingredient cards with their pot-luck donations, and make sure all donaters to classes and parties know that your child has a dangerous food allergy! it is important that you let teachers/ daycare providers know of your child's allergies. i care for children, and I never give them any food item, without checking with parents first!

Boy, I am there with you! Just starting the process to get my children's elementary school to go nut free. My son is peanut allergic and I would like to make the school as safe as possible before he starts there next year.

I know that this has been done! Many people will sit down with the leaders of the place that they wish to make nut free and discuss the situation with them. Since you are asking for a nut free environment I am going to assume that your son has a life threatening nut allergy. If that is the case use the words LIFE THREATENING. This usually gets peoples attention. Also go in with a list of safe snacks, a list of "buzz" words for nuts, and if you feel comfortable feeding your child things that safe MAY CONTAIN, PROCESSED IN A FACILITY or on SHARED EQUIPMENT. These kinds of things will help others as they shop for things like bakesales, and potlucks. Also, ask to hang a notice on the door, bulletin boards, etc... stating that this place is nut free and why (i.e. there is a child with a life threatening allergy). You are also going to have to have a little faith that if someplace says they will go nut free, that they will do it. Hope that helps!

You can always try to suggest a "nut free" enviorment. Even if you have everyone bring something store bought there is no promise that everything will be nut free. My best friend has a severe nut allergy- she's never offended or upset when we go out- and will never eat something unless she's sure of where it is from and the ingedients (fun to take out to dinner!) I would go ahead and suggest it to everyone- who knows?

I can't guarantee this. But you could try talking with the members of your organization about this. Or at least, encourage them to label the goods that have nuts in them.

Good luck!
