Beauty is in the eye of the beholder my friend. Some of my most point and shoot moments have been praised to no end by my family and have sold more of those than my "artsy" prints.
To me they become artistic when it is meaningful to me. Not everyone sees the beauty in these shots, nor the effort put into them, but they're mine and they are perfect in their imperfections.

I believe an artistic photo is a photo created with a specific idea in mind.
A 3yr old child w/ ADD can pick up a polaroid and snap a picture of any subject and produce a nice image. Does that make it artistic? Not really no.
Now, if that same child took the same photo with specific results in mind then it becomes artistic.
I don't beleive that people can judge whether a photo is artistic just by seeing the final product.

Just a photo would be a snapshot. i.e., pictures from a group outing, a birthday party, a vacation, etc. Nothing too planned.
An artistic photo would be planned out. The photographer would strategically place the subject so that the viewer's eye would be directed to it. To make a photo artistic you have to zoom in correctly, get the correct aperture and shutter speed, and make sure the lighting is right.

I think just a photo shot like point and snap is just a moment or thing caught in time. An artistic photo is more than just a snap, it is thought out, lined up just right, zoomed in or out, focused or not so focused. Yes any photo can have those qualities but an artistic photo is planned out that way.

Artsy generally means planned, posed, manipulated or worked over. "Just photos" generally are candid, lacking interesting lines, shapes or colors..like most snapshots. But even snapshots, such as vacation pix, can be very interesting because people generally take them at interesting places. If you want to move from just so-so to wow! use the viewfinder as a picture frame and look around the image, not just to see if the person is smiling or if the subject is centered and focused. Exclude telephone poles that jut into the head, move away from glass that might reflect a flash, include brightly colored items, and move about, close up, to include only the most important elements.

a regular photo or snapshot is a picture of something the way we see it everyday and look at it and say oh, i remember that that was fun. but a piece of art is when a photo is taken with the intent to change the picture from what the eye sees to what the camera sees and interprets. this brings a new meaning, feeling, and quality to the photo making the viewer think somthing extraordinary of an ordinary subject

First of all you must put your passion into it. I love it and I always go around with my Sony. You catch the right angle, the perfect light, you create a unique moment that trasfers this magic feeling to the viewer. You give an emotion with a shot, a piece of life, a corner of the landscape. It's like a painter...but you do it live. A simple photo is just an ordinary image with no coordination.

Good contrast, main subject place in strategic position (rule of 3rds), good balance of light and shadow.
