Use one bowl for each cat, simply because one will always be the "Garfield" cat that hogs all the food and the other/s will just back-away and go hungry.
Even though they may swap bowls a few times in the one feeding, it just makes sure that there is always one bowl of food available for each... although do watch out in case one is a fast feeder and then pushes the other off their bowl before they are finished.

I have 3 cats.. and one big bowl. I feed them dry food twice a day. There is always a little bit of food in there for them to munch on because they eat at different times of the day. One might be hungry, and the others are not. I tried to feed them all at the same time, but one or two just were not hungry.. so they have a bowl of food left out.. and well as a bowl of water cleaned out everyday.

At first I had to use two bowls, especially when I put out canned food. I actually used that to make them like each other - every morning I moved their bowls a little bit closer together. Now they share one big food dispenser unless I give canned food, in which case they get their own bowls. And even though they have their own water, they only drink from the dog's bowl or the toilet, they refuse to touch the water I put out from them.

I use 3 food bowls and keep them in seperate rooms. Each of the cats is on a different type of food for thier individual needs. One needs weight control, the other needs sensitive stomach food and the kitten needs baby food. If all of your cats have the same needs 1 large bowl may be enough, but they may prefer to have their own.

I've had this problem before; put out two bowls of food - that way if one cat blocks one of the bowls, the remaining cat can simply go to the other.

I use 2 bowls for my 2 cats. One reason, one cat would hog all the food. And that way, I have a pretty good idea of how much each is eating.

I put down two bowls. Just seems to work better that way. I always leave a bowl of dry food out, too.
