1. Forget all the above nonsense.
2. First of all, if you do not use a weapon regularly, you are most likely to be injured during a struggle.
3. Alarms don't guarantee a quick response.
4. Since it is reasonable to say that your neighborhood is dangerous, and not likely to improve in the near future, move!
5. Get out of there as quickly as you can. It only takes once & your dead. So find something in a better area, even if temporary until you find what you are looking for. Maybe get a roommate to split the cost.
6. Believe me, living in a dwelling without constant worry of stray bullets, break-ins, attempts on your life, is worth moving for.

Direct line to the police. A security system that has a back up to work if the line is cut or electric goes off. A large unfriendly dog. Locks on all doors and windows. Prayers.
Heat seeking missiles wouldn't hurt.

Shotgun the worst thing a guy can hear in someone elses house is the sound of the action on a shotgun. Buckshot or slug its going to hurt and for buckshot you really dont have to aim just point in that direction.

Seriously, if you buy a gun, which I feel all legal-aged Americans should do, get a Carry Concealed Weapon permit as well.

then own an alarm system, have a guard dog, have a pistol grip 12 gauge, and anything else you need from that point.

One thing that really reads bad in the news is when someone is killed with there own weapon,a guard dog is my choice.
