Well its one of the remains of the puppy dog love a person can have during their preteen years. In definition holding hands is a pure show of affection that may or may not be atributed to an actual relationship and shows a quite strong bond between the two individuals in question.

It signifies love and togetherness. Helps you feel connected to the other person. I get all mushy when I see an old couple holding hands. It's so sweet!

I guess it depends on your age.
For Teens it's the first step to dating
For Adults it's closeness and comfortablity. Cause even if I walk with my friends I sometimes hold their hands and they think nothing of it cause we're close enough where it doesn't mean something romantic all the time

it is the simplest gesture to stay connected. when a mother holds her childs hand she knows that the child is protested cause she is there to hold her/him. when a lover/spouse holds hands its almost like saying she/he is all mine. uts a connection that is apprpriate and accepted
