I had gone mudding and in the process i put my Jeep in 4wheel drive... after driving awhile i tried to take it out of 4wheel drive and the lever that puts it into 4wheel drive is just dead its loose and it moves around very loosely and easily like its not catching gears like it slipped out, But my car is still telling me it is 4wheel drive and it is because i tested it. But is it just because the gear slipped out OR what wrong????!!

I believe the linkage is stuck. Go underneath the jeep and where the shifter for the 4 wheel drive is theres a linkage there. It could be bent or as you say its very loose. Then it may have come disconnected. Reconnect it, Its a bit of a job to reconnect but you can do it. As I had the same problem with my Cherokee and shifted it manually underneath after coming out of the bush.

Try backing up for about 20 feet, this may disengage the transfer case. Make sure the vacuum hoses are connected. Your automatic hubs are activated by air. Remember that every minute you spend in the mud requires about an hour of maintance and cleaning. You are changing the fluids, right? Check under the Jeep for damage. You could of hit something. But it was worth it, wasn't it?

Sounds like the linkage. Look under the car and see if anything looks loose or dangling.
