So like, when I go up to the owner and if I decide the car is satisfactory. What sort of items should I ask for? I dont really know what a pink slip is and I need to get a "title" I believe. Im not sure, I have never bought a car before.

Yes you need to get the title from the owner
They need to sign it over to you
Ask for a Bill of sale (receipt) as well
There should be an official one from your local DMV
Before buying the car have it inspected by a mechanic, or have someone with knowledge on cars go along to check it out since most cars are sold "as is"

varies from state to state. A title for the car and write out a bill of sale with some info like the vin# on it and who to from with a witness. Here in ga if it is over 20 years do not need a title even. But in fla how ever olf the car is it needs a title. If your town requires emmision test and the seller has a current one get it too.
