You are definitely at a higher risk but it is by no means definite that you will have it. I don't think there is any way to PREVENT Bipolar. About the only thing you could do is watch for the symptoms in yourself and your sister. Perhaps she could watch you, as well. That way if symptoms do start to crop up, even if you don't see the patterns in your own behavior, she might. Early diagnosis and treatment will save your life from too much upheaval, hopefully, as opposed to living in denial and having everything all apart.

Remember, Bipolar is a condition that doesn't generally exhibit itself until a person is an adult. I don't believe there is an age beyond which it WONT show up.

Good luck and Goddess Bless your entire family!

Bipolar Disorder is the psychiatric condition with the highest degree of heridability. The odds are 70% for monozygotic twins and +- 23 % for nonidentical twins.
There are no proven ways to prevent Bipolar disorder from developing, but watching for early signs of depression (if it happens, the chances are that it will NOT) and prompt consulting with an expert lead to better treatment and control of the disease.
In short... know your chances are higher than the general population, know also that you probably will not develop the disorder, and seek treatmente soon if you think you are depressed.

Bipolar disorder is beleived to be a result of a lack of certain chemicals in the brain.

It can be heriditary, however, if you have no symptoms, I would not worry about it. But you can get a lot of info about it here

http://www.dbsalliance.org/info/bipolar.html

But again, I would not worry about it for yourself, but being educated as you are doing is important so you can recognize the disease, and how it affects an individual like your dad.

It will give you a better understanding of his condition and how you can help him.

It will also give you the knowledge in case you feel you are running into any problems.

If you have questions or concerns, always go see you doctor.

Hope that helps!

Good luck!

yes
It is my understanding that it travels on the mother's side....and it is completely treatable and just like any disorder or disease there are degrees of severity. You can be very sick...or just have a touch of this disorder....it's not a death sentence. It is an imbalance of chemicals in your body. You can control it but you have to take the time to learn about it......My ex-husband was bi-polar but was also paranoid....it is still to this day very difficult for him to accept that he has a problem. He does not take meds and treats our children poorly (not abusive, yet) when he has visitation. Soon they will refuse to visit him and I won't make them.
