Yes, chocolate is poisonous. Some months ago, a friend of mine had a beautiful, well-loved dog die after eating mulch made from the bark of the same tree that makes chocolate. Not pleasantly either.

Some chocolates are a little less toxic, and like many poisons more body mass does help to keep the poison from being so concentrated. But I'm not so sure I wish to find out for myself what the critical mass is.

A big popular culture dog book written by a phd says you can feed anything to your dog. While fully credentialed, you've got to be concerned with: #1) Sales of the book; #2) Absolute words like 'anything'.

When feeding your dog:
Some people swear by no processed foods. Reason: Preservateves are chemicals (chemi-kills).
Some people swear by no cooked meals. Reason: Bacteria are harmful if the food is not prepared properly and removed if not eaten.

In Hawaii, dogs eat coconuts. :)

I'm not a doctor and I don't write books for a living, but I would say that dogs didn't have a means to contact chocolate in the wild. Therefore, while not harmful to them, it probably stands to reason that it does more harm than good if digested in excess.

So, after all that you want an answer...(indecisive as hell here)...I'm going to go with not poisonous (because there would have to be warning labels on candy bars), but probably causes constipation, stomach problems, or whatever if not given in moderation.

Go as the Dog Whisperer. :)

It could be, depending on the quantity and type of chocolate. Ussually pure chocolate is more toxic than the milky one. the toxic substances are known as methilxantines, some of them are actually used in medicine( aminophiline, teophiline, teobromine, the last is in the chocolate) as broncodilators, and have effects in other organs, like the kidneys( diuretic), and the heart( can elevate heart rate). But teobormine can also cause serious problems, specially in large quantities, to the heart, brain and other organs as well. The treatment is sintomathic, there is no antidote, so DO NOT FEED CHOCOLATE TO YOUR DOG OR CAT!!

YES! I am in agreement with the long answer you were give. In rather small amounts it can make a dog violently ill and in larger amounts can kill them.
Many years ago I had a Great Dane get into a box of chocolate milk powder mix and within a hour we had to rush her to the vets. She had to have an operation to save her life and during the whole thing also went into shock. It was awful.
More recently my Jack Russell age a "little" chocolate off a plate that he dug out of the trash. But I watched him closely to make sure he was okay.
Play it safe NO CHOCOLATE!!! They can eat carob.

Toxicity in animals
Main article: theobromine poisoning
In sufficient amounts, the theobromine found in chocolate is toxic to animals such as horses, dogs, parrots, and cats (kittens especially) because they are unable to metabolise the chemical effectively. If they are fed chocolate, the theobromine will remain in their bloodstream for up to 20 hours, and these animals may experience epileptic seizures, heart attacks, internal bleeding, and eventually death. Medical treatment involves inducing vomiting within two hours of ingestion, or contacting a veterinarian.

A typical 20-kilogram dog will normally experience great intestinal distress after eating fewer than 240 grams of milk chocolate, but will not necessarily experience bradycardia or tachycardia unless it eats at least a half a kilogram of milk chocolate. Dark chocolate has 2 to 5 times more theobromine and thus is more dangerous to dogs. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, approximately 1.3 grams of baker's chocolate per kilogram of a dog's body weight (0.02 oz/lb) is sufficient to cause symptoms of toxicity. For example, a typical 25-gram baker's chocolate bar would be enough to bring about symptoms in a 20-kilogram dog. Of course, baking chocolate is rarely consumed directly due to its unpleasant taste, but other dark chocolates' canine toxicities may be extrapolated based on this figure. Large dogs such as St. Bernards or Rottweilers are somewhat less susceptible to poisoning, but as dogs like the taste of chocolate products as much as humans do, they should still be kept out of their reach; treats made from carob are a good substitute and pose no threat. There are reports that mulch made from cacao bean shells is dangerous to pets (and other animals)

It's not that chocolate is poisonous to your dog (cats, etc.), it's the caffiene in it that is bad. If an animal eats too much chocolate, the caffiene will make their heart race to the point that they will die. I don't feed any of my pets any kind of sweets. Refinded sugar, caffiene, etc. is not good for humans or animals and most animals are smaller than humans. So multilply the affects proportionately.

Yes, chocolate is poisonous to dogs.
There is a chemical their body can not process and causes a toxin that can shut down their livers and kidneys and eventually causes death.

I think that all sweets are bad for dogs. It makes them really sick. But I never heard anything about chocolate in particular; sorry.
