We found a Rot puppy about 3 months ago. He is about 1 year old. I would like to doc his tail but I don't want to put him through any pain. Please give me any info you may have on this.

No - I doubt you would find a vet willing to do that anyhow. Like with dew claw removal, it's best done when they are very young puppies.

You can still have it done. I got a Dobie pup that's not docked. I asked my vet about it. He would be willing to do it while she is being spayed. He said it's not too big of a deal and wouldn't hurt afterward as much as I would think.

I decided against it though. I think it would be selfish of me to put her through even a small amount of pain, just because I like the way docked tails look.

Unlike the poster above I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with tail docking

First off tail docking is different than ear cropping which is done when the dog is much older. It is much more serious surgery that required a significant healing time.

Docking a pups tail at 3 days old is IMO not cruel. Dew claws are usually removed at the same time, which can prevent injuries later.

You can dock a tail at anytime but it will be surgery and hard to find a vet willing to do it. Someone said it is not painful because they are put under but this is not true. Once they wake up it is sore for a good week. It is also very important and hard to keep your dog from licking it open which can cause infection. The other reason it's done at 3 days is because the pup just sleeps. When a dog starts walking around they sit on the newly cut tail which is painful and sore.

Yes you can get is docked at this time, but it would take him having a brief surgery and a few stitches. You need to realize that it's just for your pleasure-he doesn't care if it's long or short. After surgery an aspirin will take care of his pain. Dogs don't experience the pain the way we do. He'll be up and around immediately. BUT realize any surgery has risks, any time you put a dog under ansthe. something can go wrong. I had my Jack Russells teeth clean a couple years ago and if the vet had not really been good we would have lost her>but the vet was good and got her out from under the anesthetic.

You can dock the dogs tail but now it would be major surgery. If you have him neuterd you can have it done then.
It will not be painful as the dog would be under anestesia at the time.

Yes you can do this that late but it is very uncomfortable for him and in my eyes if that is how they were supposed to be then it would have been born that way.
