IIRC, Carter threatened a military blockade if a hostage was harmed...and a military offensive if a hostage was killed. I did some searching and found a reference to this in the book cited below. Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) wrote in his book (also cited below) that this happened sometime in early 1980...and it shut the Aytollah up. Khomeni stopped making references to killing or hurting the hostages after that. Unfortunately, it would be another 8 to 10 months before the hostages were released.

No, but he did send over a team of Americans to rescue them which turned out horribly for the United States. It was not until just before the Reagan was to answer the whitehouse that they were released. It was because the Iranians were worried that the Americans would invade under Reagan.

Carter? LOL! He was too busy wanting to listen to himself and see his mug on TV to worry about American's being held hostage. His half-hearted resuce attemp failed miserably--probably because Carter didn't want to "offend" the Iotola.

I remember there was a failed rescue attempt, the desert sands reaked havoc with the helicopters trying to reach them.
