No... The coverup thing is cultural. They're only required to cover their heads, legs and arms (same as Christian women believe it or not). We just dropped the head covering thing in the 20's and lost the leg thing over about 80 years of pushing the envelope on fashion.

It is in our Bible that women should cover their heads, but we don't put a lot of stock in it anymore for some reason.

Muslims often lose the veil and black coverings as soon as they get on a plane for the West.

Well every religion wants women to wear modest clothing and Islam is one of them. Starting from Hindism, Jews, Chrisitians, Muslims etc all have the dress code but currently only Muslims are following them, am I right on that. YES I AM IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME LET ME KNOW.

No they dont I have muslim friends and they dont cover up totally but their heads they do and those that do this is beacuse when Islam was first introduced it was very hot in the middle east and because the muslims were so clever they decided to cover up. thats why they dont get skin cancer some people decided to keep the tradition going on and they still do today, in the quran I believe u just have to cover your body not your hands or feet but your head does..no i think you can play musical instruments come on just becasue some people take it tot he extreme it doesnt mean the whole religion is like that!

Some answers have been sensible and illustrate to us how little we know about things we express opinions on. Most interesting. Personally as a western Christan I think a little of the covering of the female bod y in public would be agreeable.I am quite tired of seeing exposed navels and protruding flesh bulging over jeans an d as for pregnant Ladies showing us the expansion of their bellies, well, maybe Islam has a point

Yes Muslim women are allowed to cover all her body from head up to the toe because there do not allowed some body that is not her husband or parent to see her body, and this is a good teaching from wives of our prophet always Islam teach his followers a good thing that can lead them to success.
And i call your attention to be a Muslim because it is only a good religion, that playing music is better for you to stop it because can not lead you to any achieve.

From my experience in Afghanistan when I was a soldier, I noticed most women didn't cover up to the point of Taliban Extreamism, but their are women over in Afghanistan, that infact do that once and a while as they choose as a tradition and no more.

Note: There are still pockets of Taliban control so there is evidently still extream customs, that are practiced.

I was not in a area were the Taliban controll the life style of the people so I can not say anything more than what is known as fact, to the prejudice of proper sociological analysis.

I was told by a Muslim friend that it is required for men and women to dress conservatively .As per usual the men have taken this as another way to subjugate women so it's OK for them to wear t-shirts when it's 90 degrees but women have to be covered head to foot in black of all colours

in quran, hijaab means to cover women's hair and body.it can be followed just by covering hair by scarf and body by a loose dress which does not conseal the body's shape.nowadays people have included to cover the face as well and hand and feet with gloves.but this is not mentioned in quran...

No.

God says in the Quran:

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands or ...."

See: http://www.islamweb.net/ver2/archive/article.php?lang=E&id=31087

I think the only reason one should ever consider becoming a Muslim, is if he recognises it to be the truth with his heart and mind, that alone should be the criterion. The likes and dislikes of men are many, for God says in the Quran

But it may happen that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that you like a thing which is bad for you. And God knows and you know not." (2:216)

Also something else to bear in mind is the meaning of Islam; Islam means total submission to God. This life is a test and it is for man to overcome his own likes, whims and desire to instead follow the will of God.

But above all one must ask God alone for Guidance for, he who God guides none can lead astray.

I am muslim woman and I am covering my head. The way I dress is not totally in black. Today I am wearing orange cloth. And I never wearing all in black. The Syiah always practising wearing in black. The way muslim woman dress is must be polite, we must not wearing cloth which is tight. It is a must for muslim women to cover their head and hair. Face and hand may be exposed.

Besides, there maybe mosque in your residential area. Pls do visit any mosque to learn anything about Islam. We are welcome any non-muslim to get any information about Islam.
In Koran there is a sentence ask Muslim including man to cover their aurah. Pls see this
O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition!

[27] O ye Children of Adam! let not Satan seduce you, in the same manner as he got your parents out of the Garden, stripping them of their raiment, to expose their shame: for he and his tribe watch you from a position where ye cannot see them: We made the Evil Ones friends (only) to those without Faith.
Ref: Surah Al-Aaraf, 26

I am happy to say that Islam is beautiful and so tolerate. Islam never put woman at below level. The purpose Islam put this dressing code because Islam want to protect their woman from any humiliation.
