House training question...?

I have a male italian greyhound puppy who very quickly learned how to be puppy pad trained. He does not have any accidents at all in my house. The breeder I got him from trained him this way. The problem is no matter how long I walk him he WON'T do his thing outside, EVER. He will come right back in and go to the puppy pad. I even catch him in the middle of using the pad and bring him out and he still doesn't get it. Any suggestions? Has this ever happened to anyone else?

You can try buying the puppy pads that are grass scented, then he can at least start to associate that odor with the outside. They worked great with my puppy and he had no confuse. There is also a spray you can buy that smells like urine but when you spray it outside it makes them pee. It will be a gradual process but he should pick it up with some time and work.

I had a similar training experience with my beagle.

When you take him outside for walks, try taking a puppy pad with you. Every once in a while lay it down on the grass and encourage him to go. When he does, give him lots of praise and a treat. Keep doing this for each walk, and gradually make the puppy pad smaller and smaller (cut it up at home with some scissors before going out), until there is NO puppy pad and he just goes in the grass.

Puppy Pad training is the WORST for this very reason. Put a pad outside where you want him to go and get rid of every pad....don't leave them around or have them 'just in case.' Start as if the dog were never trained and go with KENNEL TRAINING. Get the scoop on kennel training from my older posts or online and then FOLLOW IT to the letter.

In future, never get a dog that is paper trained. Ick.

This is why I tell my clients NEVER to house break using newspaper or puppy pee pads.
You have taught him it is ok to go in the house on the pad and now you are changing the rules. He does not get it.
Try putting a pad outside where you want him to go and take him out all the time. If he goes outside make a huge deal out of the fact that he went.
I had one who would never go when on the leash.

I also have two cocker spaniels. To train them to go outside, place the puppy pad outside on the grass in the area you would like himn to go for about two weeks while reducing the puppy pad in the house until you donj't use it in the house anymore.

After another week of using the pad outside, begin to remove it. The puppy will associate that spot with where he has to go.

Also, make sure you rewward the dog with a lot of praise when he does his business on the pad outside. He will associate that function with the praise, and seek to do it all of the time. Of course, as he gets older, you won't have to worry about it at all.

It should take you about 3 weeks to make the conversion.

Try moving the pad outside to an area where you want him to go. Then when he goes, say something like potty or outside, so he can start associating that with going outside. My mom's dogs won't go at all when they're on a leash. So, they always let them in the yard before walks.

I had this problem with a pup too! He is trained to use the pads and only the pads! The best thing to do is to slowly move the pads to the door, when they get to the door move them outside and then eventully take them away from him. It also helps to use a comand when he goes, I use "go pee" every time he goes to the pads say your potty comand and after he goes praise him good, then try to use the comand outside where you want him to go! If he goes outside praise him like you would if he saved your life! Good luck!

Try taking the pad out side. then walk the dog after it goes potty.
it will soon associate the out doors with going potty.

I agree, submissive urination or the choice. If he's purposefully peeing then he may be marking your terriority. you're his "mate." additionally, he would pee from exhilaration. My domestic dog did this around 5-8 months previous. when I had customer over he would pee close to them, generally by using fact I hadn't taken him to potty these days. while you're domicile, enable the canines out contained in the morning, 3-4 cases contained in the day time and as quickly as at night around 9 and in case you pass to mattress late, take him out one final time too.
