The first question I need to ask you is do you mean citizenship or residence?? I really don't know where the previous answerer got his information but it isn't that easy and it certainly isn't that cheap!!! The first step in obtaining citizenship is to obtain a residence permit. Residency is obtained by satisfying New Zealand's residency requirements which revolve around either having the skills that are required here or by having sufficient funds to invest in a business. Additionally, there are age, health, language and character requirements. Citizenship is not guaranteed, but, in normal circumstances, may be applied for after 5 years of residency.

The best starting point is the NZ immigration site, where you will find pretty well everything you want to know and can even complete a 'test' to see if you would qualify for residency.

New Zealand is eager to attract skilled and/or financially sound immigrants so the process is not 'too hard' but, because it is important that only immigrants who can help the country grow are accepted, the process can take some time and can be fairly costly, especially if you use the services of consultants rather than complete your application yourself.
