If had to decide between a Granite top and ordinary carpets through out your home(except for kitchen and bath)or a modern looking laminate top and upgraded tile with border accents throughout what would you choose?

That would depend on where I lived and how I used my house. If I had kids playing on the floors a lot, carpet, it's so much more comfortable than tile, and cheaper than area rugs. The granite counter is a bonus either way for its durability. I'm not a fan of carpet stains and shampoo machines, but I did grow up in the midwest and I think "tile" and my feet get cold.

Granite tops are so much better than laminate, so that would be an easy choice for me. They're a lot more durable and practical--laminate tops just look outdated and tacky, I think. I would get the granite and the carpet; I like carpet better than tile personally, because I hate mopping and tile can be really slippery. I think carpet also gives a home a warmer feeling--too much tile can be cold. If you want a modern look, you can also do that with carpet, I think. Just go with a cool carpet color (a cream or taupe), and then let good paint and modern-styled furniture do the rest. I didn't think granite was such a big thing until I lived in a house with granite countertops--they're so sleek and stylish! Kitchens are so hard to make look really good, I think, and the granite makes the difference. My mother tried a modern-looking laminate top in her kitchen. It looked okay--better than those old ones; but it chipped pretty soon, and it made the rest of the kitchen, which had been done over really beautifully, look cheaper.

Definitely tile, because I hate vacuuming and shampooing carpets.
One of our cats dug a hole in the carpet in front of my bedroom door.
