What a touching idea you have ... bravo for wanting to make a memorable activity! We didn't really have any in our family but I worked with someone who did something that stays with me to this day:
Mom bought a red dinner plate -- just one. Whenever someone had done something to be recognized (aced a test, scored a winning run, etc.) or if it was their birthday, they got to have their dinner on the red plate.
It's a simple way to acknowledge that a child has done something special, and it doesn't cost a thing (after buying the plate, of course).
Good luck!

My favorite tradition in my family is that we have "Christmas in July".
It's not always July, but we all agree to meet at the folks house in the summer to play games, goof on the computer and visit. Not having the stress of Christmas and presents is a relief. We don't do presents but we always play a board game like trivial pursuit.
When I was younger, the drive my mother "dragged" us on a viewing of the changing leaves in the Fall. We hated having to go, but enjoyed it once we did it -- it is one of my fondest childhood memories.
Travel is a very good one. We did not have a tradition, per se, but each of our family vacations or trips to the grandparents still stand out.
If we got too loud my dad would tell us to play a game -- we'd have to be totally silent when between bridges we'd drive under. That was the signal. We could be loud for a stretch and then silent. Mostly we just fell asleep......

Christmas time:
-putting ornaments around the tree
-sorting out the presents
-marching into the room with the presents singing jingle bells from tallest to shortest.
-hanging stockings
Other traditions:
-Easter egg basket hunts around the house
-Easter egg hunts in backyard
Things like that. Hope it helps.

TO START WITH...TRY EATING TOGETHER WHENEVER POSSIBLE....
AM AN INDIAN ..SO WE HAVE LOADS OF FESTIVALS..ON WHICH WE FIRST PRAY TO OUR GODS FOR PEACE AND PROSPERITY OF OUR FAMILY AND WE CELEBRATE THEM TOGETHER.....THESE ARE THE REAL MOMENTS OF JOY!!..
TRADITIONS??..WE HAVE DIFFERENT SOCIETIES...SO YOUR AND MINE MAY NOT MATCH.....BUT TRY TEACHING OUR CHILDREN ALWAYS RESPECT YOUR PARENTS!!..
NOTHING ABOVE PARENTS AND FAMILY IN LIFE!!!
