Perhaps your mother was referring to fact that coffee is brewed from a botanical and could be considered a tisane. However according to definition a tisane is not a tea and coffee does somewhat meet the definition of a tisane.

Tisane

A tisane, ptisan or herbal "tea" is any herbal infusion not made from the leaves of the tea bush (Camellia sinensis). The English word "tisane" originated from the Greek word πτισάνη (ptisanē), a drink made from pearl barley.

Tisanes can be made with fresh or dried flowers, leaves, seeds or roots, generally by pouring boiling water over the plant parts and letting them steep for a few minutes. Seeds and roots can also be boiled on a stove. The tisane is then strained, sweetened if so desired, and served. Many companies produce herbal tea bags for such infusions.

Many blends of real tea are prepared by adding other plants to an actual tea (black, oolong, green, yellow or white tea); for example, the popular Earl Grey tea is black tea with bergamot. Such preparations are varieties of tea, not tisanes.

Nope! Although both beverages have caffeine. Tea is made from leaves; fermented (black), semi-fermented (oolong), and non-fermented (green), (with possible spices/fruits added for flavor) It can also be de-daffeinated. It has healthful flavinoids.

Coffee is made from beans, roasted in vaious ways, and also has flavors added and can be de-caffeinated. Coffee, on the whole has about twice (or more) the amount of caffeine than tea.

Tea is brewed from leaves. Coffee is brewed from beans that are made from the "cherries" of coffee trees which are dried and roasted. They are definitely not the same thing.

no. tea is made from the leaves of a tea plant. coffee is made from the roasted seeds (not beans) of the coffee plant (usually coffea arabica). they are similar only in the fact that they are both made from mixing water with a botanical ingredient.
